R Thoughts...

March 2005.  Besides it's religious significance to the world's Catholics, St. Peter's Basilica is home to some of the worlds most famous marble work and architectural wonders.  There is a spot in the middle of the public square that you can stand in and see just what appears to be a single row of columns.  Stand anywhere else and you see that it's actually 4 rows of columns.  It's really quite wonderful.  As is the "optical illusions" inside the basilica (i.e. the statues of popes that appear to be all the same size stacked on top of each other are in reality a great deal bigger than it's predecessor if measured exactly).

As this was our first "overseas" trip, we had neither the experience nor the equipment to get good photos.  Below are some photos from inside the basilica: Michaelangelo's "The Pieta" (now behind several feet of glass because a crazy Aussie tourist attacked it with a hammer of some kind), some of the intricate marble work, and the underside of the famous "dome".
